Members' EOY Celebration - Speculative Design: Sampling the Future (PL2141)

DATTA Vic members - join colleagues from throughout the state at our free, online teach meet celebrating the end of 2021! We'll be exploring Speculative Design with the NGVone of the most significant new innovation methods which looks towards the future to address big problems by creating products and services for those scenarios.

Join Ewan McEoin, the Hugh Williamson Senior Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture and Myf Doughty, Assistant Curator Contemporary Design and Architecture to talk about speculative design and why it matters, with examples from NGV exhibitions and projects including Sampling the Future  currently on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square.

Ewan and Myf will ask, what is speculative design and what part does it play in innovation? What is the role of public institutions like the NGV in shaping design conversations by showcasing and commissioning works of speculative design? How might speculative design practices inform the way we teach design?

Participants will:

  • Define speculative design
  • Discuss the role of speculative design in discovery and innovation
  • Examine the practice and processes of contemporary designers
  • Consider how classroom methodologies might be shaped by speculative design practice

You're encouraged to join with a glass of wine, bottle of beer or mug of herbal tea, to farewell 2021 and celebrate a much-needed break!
