Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Join us for a day of exciting professional learning, inside the In Aetheria studio, where you will spend your day gaining confidence in a textile decoration technique that will also give you the opportunity to let your creative juices flow!

Run by the talented multifaceted designer, artist, creatrix and founder of In Aetheria, Amanda Lo Bartolo! Amanda studied Fashion Design at RMIT and her experiences kept leading her to this free flowing and magical discipline.

During the session you will create your own water marbled textile piece as well as leave with different fabric sample swatches to show and inspire your students.

This professional learning session is directed to any Design and Technologies teachers at any experience level and the medium being focussed on will be fabric.

Life started to make a whole lot more sense, when Amanda, the founder of In Aetheria Studio realised her offering to the world was to be the merging of the art of water marbling with fashion design and healing into one experience.

This workshop will introduce attendees to the traditional techniques of water marbling, whilst then being encouraged and guided to look beyond the guidelines and discover their own flavour, their own personality expressed via the art form to make room for innovation. Amanda fell in love with how the art is a visually stimulating and mindful practice in itself, which is why she felt called to share it with the world.

The focus of the workshops are as versatile prints for any end use one may imagine, whilst Amanda specialises in applying the art onto fabric and exploring the design opportunities this provides - the creativity doesn’t have to end in the studio, the marbling may be a great starting point to further design development and exploration!

This program is only open to current DATTA Vic members.

Schools in Victoria are currently facing a severe shortage in recruiting trained Design & Technologies teachers. Over the past few years, many D&T teachers have retired, and with limited opportunities for people to undertake initial teacher education in D&T, we have a situation with a growing number of job openings and no one to fill them. DATTA Vic is working with our partners to develop long term solutions to this crisis.

However, we understand that schools need support now, as more and more teachers from other learning areas (art, science, etc) are being called on to deliver the D&T curriculum.  We also know that the problem is even greater for schools in regional areas. And while we welcome the new Grad Cert in Secondary Design & Technologies, we recognise that only teachers from Government schools who already have a D&T load are eligible to participate.

Therefore we are repeating our Online Teaching Design Masterclass for our members in Term 2. The program is targeted at new and existing teachers who may not have had initial Technologies Teacher training but are currently teaching, or wish to teach, the D&T curriculum in secondary schools. However, it is also very relevant to existing teachers of D&T who wish to learn more about design education. Note there will also be content related to the new VCE Product Design & Technologies study design.

The Masterclass will be delivered by Peter Murphy, former president of DATTA Australia and DATTA Vic who has been delivering Teaching Design Masterclasses for DATTA Vic since 2019. Peter is a sought after speaker and leader in Design and Technologies education.

The program will be delivered via five webinars. These will run from 5pm - 7pm on 28th May, 4th June, 11th June, 18th June and 25th June. There will also be 2 hours of project work each week, to be carried out at a time suitable for each participant.

To be eligible for this program, you must:

          • be a DATTA Vic member
          • be available to attend the webinars at the times and dates listed above
          • be able to set aside an additional 2 hours each week to carry out project work
          • to participate in evaluation of the program at the end, offering constructive feedback on all activities

Participants will be introduced to a wide range of topics, including:

          • Modelling & prototyping techniques
          • Teaching the design processes
          • Developing curriculum for Years 7-10
          • CAD
          • Emerging Technologies
          • Sustainability & ethics
          • Speculative design
          • Teaching STEM in D&T
          • Classroom Management and OH&S
          • Tackling real-world problems
          • The new VCE Product Design & Technologies Study Design

*NOTE - This is not a program to train teachers in the use of machinery and tools. It is intended as a means of support for educators faced with delivering an unfamiliar curriculum and offers an approach to developing programs teaching the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills without the use of the usual power tools and machines found in the Design & Technologies workshop. It also offers fresh perspectives for existing D&T teachers on the potential of the learning area to develop creative problem solvers. DATTA Vic’s main priority is to continue to advocate for a governmental response to the need to grow the number of opportunities for initial teacher education in Design & Technologies.

In this hands-on workshop, delivered in the beautiful surrounds of the Victorian Pride Centre, participants will develop ways through which they can engage a classroom in creative design practice through interactive collaborative prototyping methods.

Using simple, inexpensive and easily accessible materials they will discover ways to engage in a playful 'make-break-repeat' approach to testing design ideas before committing to a final output.

This professional learning session is perfect for teachers in all areas of Design and Technologies, and especially VCE teachers who are integrating more prototyping methods into their Units 1 - 4 teaching practice.

Only open to DATTA Vic members

DATTA Vic and Banyule Nillumbik Tech School are teaming up again to deliver the Success with Systems Engineering Masterclass program during the September school break.

Systems Engineering offers a great way to deliver STEM learning opportunities that equip young people with the skills they'll need for a global, technology-driven and flexible future.

However, Victorian schools are facing barriers to successful delivery, including dropping numbers of student enrolments at VCE and a lack of qualified teachers in the Design & Technologies learning area.

Our Success with Systems Engineering program has four aims:

              • To upskill teachers from other STEM areas (Design & Technologies, Physics, etc) to deliver engaging and relevant Systems Engineering programs

              • To support schools who are struggling to recruit Systems Engineering teachers

              • To explore ways to attract and retain a more diverse cohort of students in Systems Engineering
              • To offer support to schools to set up VCE Systems Engineering as a senior subject

Registrations are open now to participate in this teacher masterclass, which will run in the term break from 18-22 September

Numbers are strictly limited, so register early to ensure your place.

Morning tea and lunch each day are served, and all resources are provided.

Feedback from participants of our previous Success with Systems workshops:

              • The masterclass covered all the requirements to be able to know how to begin teaching VCE Systems.
              • A Lot of practical demonstrations and hands-on activities to develop skills for teaching
              • Practical demos tuning us into having a go! The challenges throughout were pitched at the right fundamental level.
              • Great strategies for how to teach complicated topics
              • Was amazing! I learned so much about course content in regards to VCE and I enjoyed learning the components of systems and coding.
              • Very well presented and totally engaging
