Resource for VCE Product Design & Technologies – Cultural Influence on Design Anzara Clark is an award-winning Ballarat based multidisciplinary artist and designer who combines traditional craft and contemporary experimental approaches to explore paper as a textile. Her unique garments and accessories begin with a four-day task to dye and process Japanese washi paper, which is made from the bark of the mulberry tree. This knowledge comes from many years of study of traditional techniques from Korea and Japan. Anzara has a deep respect for craft traditions and mastery, and the way they centre the value of human creativity, presence, patience, and dedication to quality. She is committed to embedding sustainability principles and practices in her creative work; not only from an environmental perspective, but also to support the preservation of cultural knowledge. This resource offers a case study of Anzara Clark's work, and features recordings of Anzara exploring her processes and practices along with related discussion topics. There is a particular focus on cultural influence on design - in this case, Japanese and Korean traditions - and exploring paper as a textile.
