Sustainability is at the heart of our entire learning area, from the early years right through to VCE PD&T and Systems Engineering. In P-10, students create design solutions for a sustainable future. In VCE Systems, they develop systems engineering processes that improve environmental sustainability. And in the new VCE PD&T , the circular economy and ethical product design are key concepts that underpin the entire study design. Thinking outside the box - A sustainable seating unit of work | OR23 |
Thinking Outside the Box - The Sustainable Seating Project is a Year 7/8 Unit of Work from Forest Learning and DATTA Vic which investigates the properties and sustainability of cardboard . Using ForestVR 360o videos, students go on virtual excursions to an Australian pine plantation and paper mill to experience the cycle of growing sustainable wood fibre and how it is processed into paperboard. Following the design thinking process, students then investigate, design, produce and evaluate a sustainable seat made from upcycled cardboard.

Florian van den Corput is the Senior Advisor on Circular Economy at Sustainability Victoria, who has previously worked as an Industrial Design Engineer. The Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop is a teacher education program delivered in partnership between Melbourne Museum and DATTA Vic and funded by Creative Futures. Each year, teachers come together for a unique professional learning experience on using museum collections and design thinking practices to enrich schools-based design education. This is a recording from a 2022 Online Teach Meet , which was a partnership between DATTA Vic and the NGV. It explored how myco-cycling can tackle the problem of plastic waste - and how it's happening right here in Melbourne! We were joined by Amanda Morgan, founder and Head of Research and Development at the multi-award-winning Fungi Solutions, who shared how their work with this amazing natural organism diverts resources from landfill to sequester carbon, creates new materials and generates economic opportunities. With an extensive background in prototyping, Amanda now works closely with clients at Fungi Solutions to develop refined mycelium solutions for their products. She brings expertise in innovative social and environmental programs and an enthusiasm for helping others to get involved with cultivating fungi. With initial focus on the development of a targeted recycling program, using the material by-product from the process as circular packaging, Amanda has developed a range of targeted mycelium strains for the remediation of pollutants and the production of Mycomaterials (alternatives to single use plastics, animal by-products and timber milled products). This is a recording from our free members' event that was part of Design & Technologies Week 2026 and explored regenerative design and the circular economy. Isabella Raco is a designer, researcher and educator working at the intersection of textile material systems, digital technologies, design as transformation, and social impact. Circularity and regenerative transformation are the baseline of Isabella’s practice. As a PhD candidate at the RMIT University School of Design and a sessional educator in the School of Fashion and Textiles, her work investigates how creative participation can shift our relationship to materials and clothing, moving from passive consumption to active stewardship within a circular economy. For Isabella, making is a catalyst for behavioural and cultural change. Through her workshops, participants engage directly with repair, reuse and redesign as embodied systems thinking, developing both technical skills and circular literacy. In late 2024, Melbourne Museum & DATTA Vic took the Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop on the road to Shepparton. In a full-day workshop for local educators hosted by Greater Shepparton Secondary College, we explored how teachers could develop a speculative design project for their classes which is based on their unique needs and interests as rural & regional schools. The day resulted in a new resource - Our Town 2050 - which can be used by teachers wherever they are as a way to engage their students in the design process, learning about the past and speculative thinking, all in the context of their own communities. Learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Culture is a Cross-Curriculum Priority within the Victorian curriculum, but can be challenging to address it appropriately within a practical subject. This recorded online teach meet for DATTA Vic members explored ways to celebrate First Nations knowledges within the Design & Technologies curriculum.
