This toolkit can be used by P-10 Design & Technologies, VCE Product Design & Technologies and VCE Systems Engineering teachers to embed and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in their classroom teaching.

The circular economy resource package from DATTA Vic & Sustainability Victoria | MR3


Sustainability is at the heart of our entire learning area, from the early years right through to VCE PD&T and Systems Engineering.

In P-10, students create design solutions for a sustainable future. In VCE Systems, they develop systems engineering processes that improve environmental sustainability. And in the new VCE PD&T , the circular economy and ethical product design are key concepts that underpin the entire study design.

In 2024, DATTA Vic and Sustainability Victoria teamed up on a series of webinars exploring the Circular Economy. With additional support from Replas, we delivered four online sessions:

Thinking outside the box - A sustainable seating unit of work  | OR23


Thinking Outside the Box - The Sustainable Seating Project is a Year 7/8 Unit of Work from Forest Learning and DATTA Vic which investigates the properties and sustainability of cardboard . Using ForestVR 360o videos, students go on virtual excursions to an Australian pine plantation and paper mill to experience the cycle of growing sustainable wood fibre and how it is processed into paperboard. Following the design thinking process, students then investigate, design, produce and evaluate a sustainable seat made from upcycled cardboard.

What is the circular economy? | MR7


Florian van den Corput is the Senior Advisor on Circular Economy at Sustainability Victoria, who has previously worked as an Industrial Design Engineer. In this online workshop for members from May 2024, Florian gives an in-depth explanation about the concept of a Circular Economy, one of the six sustainability frameworks in the VCE Product Design and Technologies study design. He explores the role of design in securing a sustainable future for our country, and offers several inspiring case studies from Australia and across the globe.

Sustainability Victoria's Brijesh Parmer gives an in-depth explanation about the concept of a Circular Economy within the fashion industry, one of the six sustainability frameworks/strategies in the Product Design and Technologies study design. 

This session covers issues about changing behaviours within the industry, social issues that impact on the environment, economy and people who work in the industry, and solutions that currently exist. This session is relevant to all Design and Technologies teachers and will help unpack what a circular economy is and how it is applied to product design.

The plastics industry x the circular economy | MR6


This is the recording from a special DATTA Vic members' event from March 2024. 

Sustainability is at the heart of our entire learning area, from the early years right through to VCE .

In P-10, students create design solutions for a sustainable future. In VCE Systems, they develop systems engineering processes that improve environmental sustainability. And in the new VCE PD&T , the circular economy and ethical product design are key concepts that underpin the entire study design. This workshop offers teachers the perfect case study in sustainable and ethical product design, service design and systems engineering.

Watch Chris Smith from Replas share the history of the company, the science behind working with recycled plastics and the innovative products they develop. He'll share why Replas is a fantastic example of the circular economy and the drive to eliminate plastic waste that we are lucky to have right here in our own back yard!

The nesting box project - Designing for biodiversity| OR5


Design for biodiversity. Build for impact.

This engaging project invites Year 9–10 students to apply the product design process to a real-world ecological challenge — supporting wildlife through the design of functional and sustainable nesting boxes. Inspired by habitat restoration practices in sustainably managed forests, students explore how design is used to support biodiversity outcomes in both natural and production landscapes.

They research local wildlife species in their own area, investigate how foresters and land managers use design to protect biodiversity, and prototype their own solutions using sustainable materials.

Creative Futures: Future eco fashion | OR9


The Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop is a teacher education program delivered in partnership between Melbourne Museum and DATTA Vic and funded by Creative Futures.   

Each year, teachers come together for a unique professional learning experience on using museum collections and design thinking practices to enrich schools-based design education.

They also contribute to the development of new Design & Technologies classroom resources based on museum collections.

In 2024, DATTA Vic and Melbourne Museum collaborated with our participating teachers to create a Future Eco Fashion resource which engages students in sustainable and ethical fashion design. This resource is an editable student portfolio.

This hands-on project helps Year 7–8 students explore the product design process while building a functional phone stand using engineered wood like plywood. Fantastic fungi - the sustainable solution to plastic waste | MR16


This is a recording from a 2022 Online Teach Meet , which was a partnership between DATTA Vic and the NGV. It explored how myco-cycling can tackle the problem of plastic waste - and how it's happening right here in Melbourne! 

We were joined by Amanda Morgan, founder and Head of Research and Development at the multi-award-winning Fungi Solutions, who shared how their work with this amazing natural organism diverts resources from landfill to sequester carbon, creates new materials and generates economic opportunities.

With an extensive background in prototyping, Amanda now works closely with clients at Fungi Solutions to develop refined mycelium solutions for their products. She brings expertise in innovative social and environmental programs and an enthusiasm for helping others to get involved with cultivating fungi. With initial focus on the development of a targeted recycling program, using the material by-product from the process as circular packaging, Amanda has developed a range of targeted mycelium strains for the remediation of pollutants and the production of Mycomaterials (alternatives to single use plastics, animal by-products and timber milled products). 

A great way to explore the concepts of sustainable and ethical design, professional practice, preferred futures, materials science and technologies in society.

Circular & regenerative design with Isabella Raco | MR67


This is a recording from our free members' event that was part of Design & Technologies Week 2026 and explored regenerative design and the circular economy.

Isabella Raco is a designer, researcher and educator working at the intersection of textile material systems, digital technologies, design as transformation, and social impact. Circularity and regenerative transformation are the baseline of Isabella’s practice. As a PhD candidate at the RMIT University School of Design and a sessional educator in the School of Fashion and Textiles, her work investigates how creative participation can shift our relationship to materials and clothing, moving from passive consumption to active stewardship within a circular economy.

For Isabella, making is a catalyst for behavioural and cultural change. Through her workshops, participants engage directly with repair, reuse and redesign as embodied systems thinking, developing both technical skills and circular literacy.

At this online event, Isabella shared her practice and unpacked the concepts of regenerative design, the circular economy and systems thinking.

In February 2026, Melbourne Museum & DATTA Vic took the Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop to Bendigo.  We were hosted by the wonderful Bendigo Tech School, and joined by educators from a range of local schools. Our design sprint used a place-based approach, with Bendigo’s landscape, industries and communities shaping the design challenges explored on the day. Teachers worked collaboratively to develop future-focused Design & Technologies teaching and learning programs grounded in local context, which we developed into a resource.

Technacy is the ability to understand, skillfully apply and communicate creative and appropriate technological solutions that are based on understanding the contextual factors involved.

In the newly implemented VCE Product Design & Technologies senior subject, Working Technologically and Technacy is included as one of the key cross-study specifications. Essentially our students must not only have skills in the use of a range of technologies, but also an understanding of the cultural influences that affect how, when and why they are used.

In 2024, DATTA Vic and Banyule Nillumbik Tech School teamed up to deliver a series of five essential Technacy skills immersions for teachers – all free for our members and BNTS partner schools thanks to support from the Google Educator Professional Development Grant. We explored VR and AR, Generative A.I., Machine Learning, Speculative Design and Cultural Influence on Design. Teachers could choose to come to one or all of the sessions, or catch up on the recordings of the online workshops.

Creative Futures: Melbourne's Future Story| OR14


The Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop is a teacher education program delivered in partnership between Melbourne Museum and DATTA Vic and funded by Creative Futures.

Each year, teachers come together for a unique professional learning experience on using museum collections and design thinking practices to enrich schools-based design education.

They also contribute to the development of new Design & Technologies classroom resources based on museum collections.

In 2022, our participating teachers helped to produce a new speculative design resource called Melbourne's Future Story. This is a digital portfolio that helps students explore the history of Melbourne’s story and then generate new and innovative ideas for how it can sustainably evolve in the future in the areas of transport, energy and community.

This resource is available as a PDF but also as an editable Google Slide doc, which means teachers can adapt it to suit their own context.

Northcote High School's James Dutton took a step-by-step look at Design & Technologies projects using OnShape for Laser-cutting. Creative Futures: Our town 2050 | OR4


In late 2024, Melbourne Museum & DATTA Vic took the Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop on the road to Shepparton.  In a full-day workshop for local educators hosted by Greater Shepparton Secondary College, we explored how teachers could develop a speculative design project for their classes which is based on their unique needs and interests as rural & regional schools.

The day resulted in a new resource - Our Town 2050 - which can be used by teachers wherever they are as a way to engage their students in the design process, learning about the past and speculative thinking, all in the context of their own communities. Going green in your school canteen - a year 5/6 Design & Technologies/Geography project| OR26


This resource integrates the Level 5 and 6 curriculums, focusing on HASS (Geography) and Design and Technologies, to teach students about the origin and sustainability of materials used in products. Through a series of nine 60-minute lessons, students will explore sustainable design by creating a reusable cutlery pouch, comparing renewable materials like rayon with non-renewable ones.

They will engage in the design thinking process to investigate single-use plastics in their school and generate ideas for promoting sustainability within the community. Developed by ForestLearning in collaboration with DATTA Vic and GTAV, the resource supports sustainable school initiatives and utilizes ForestLearning’s ForestVR virtual reality tool. The lessons emphasize the importance of sustainable forests, which provide essential resources, protect the environment, and offer a renewable alternative to materials like polyester and plastics. Station Ideation - a Minecraft Mission| OR16


Station Ideation was a ground-breaking classroom mission from 2022 based on Melbourne’s new Town Hall Station, part of the Metro Tunnel rail line which opened to the public in 2025. Using Minecraft: Education Edition, students were some of the first to travel through this newly released world. But even through the competition is over, teachers can still use the resources to get your students engaged in authentic user-centred design.

On your journey through the station, the Metro Tunnel design team will invite your class to join them in transforming a space to meet the needs of all passengers. The Cricut is a computerized cutting machines designed to precisely cut, score, write, and draw on over 100+ materials like vinyl, paper, fabric, and cardstock. It connects to a computer or mobile app to create personalized projects such as custom apparel and decals.

Tech for Textiles – Using the Cricut in Design & Technologies was the theme of this online workshop for DATTA Vic members. Inclusive teaching practices in STEM | OR13


The 2025 STEM Learning Community, hosted by Casey Tech School in collaboration with DATTA Victoria, is designed for educators passionate about STEM and Inclusive Education. It provides a space to collaborate, share ideas, and explore innovative teaching strategies.

This initiative has been brought to life through the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership's Teaching Impact Fellowship, awarded to Andy Ding, Technologies Teacher and Wellbeing & Inclusion Leader at Gleneagles Secondary College. In partnership with Casey Tech School and DATTA Vic, Andy has developed teacher professional develop workshops and associated resources to support inclusive teaching practices. These resources are made available to all educators, helping them create more inclusive learning environments. They include materials on A.I. and navigating neurodiversity and challenging behaviours.

A year 9 Design & Technologies project celebrating First Nations histories & cultures|MR50


Learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Culture is a Cross-Curriculum Priority within the Victorian curriculum, but can be challenging to address it appropriately within a practical subject.

This recorded online teach meet for DATTA Vic members  explored ways to celebrate First Nations knowledges within the Design & Technologies curriculum. Martin Blake from Camberwell High School took participants through a Year 9 unit of work that reflects and celebrates the lands of the Wurundjeri people. He explored:

  • What is indigenous education 
  • Who to speak to before you start planning 
  • Importance of making it local to the local mob
  • Why is it tricky with technology based subjects
