Creative Futures: Custodians - Skills for what comes next | OR27
| The Creative Futures Annual Design Workshop is a teacher education program delivered in partnership between Melbourne Museum and DATTA Vic and funded by Creative Futures. Each year, teachers come together for a unique professional learning experience on using museum collections and design thinking practices to enrich schools-based design education. |
They also contribute to the development of new Design & Technologies classroom resources based on museum collections.
In June 2026, DATTA Vic and Melbourne Museum welcomed an amazing group of educators to our annual design workshop. This year’s theme was INNOVATION – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE. The day started with a visit to Rome: Empire, Power, People to explore the ground-breaking inventions that were developed over 2000 years ago. Next our group viewed Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre to better understand First People’s approaches to using natural resources. Then through a series of design sprints, including a session led by Swinburne University, our participants considered what innovations we will need for a sustainable tomorrow while learning from yesterday's innovations.
The results of these activities led to our new resource: CUSTODIANS – SKILLS FOR WHAT COMES NEXT, which engages students in speculative thinking, sustainability and ethical design. |
This project asks students to explore contrasting worldviews, including Rome's more linear systems of extraction, production and control alongside more relational and circular approaches to Country, resources and continuity. From there, they imagine a society that values maintaining, repairing and adapting what already exists. Students then choose a damaged or unwanted product and redesign it so it can continue to be used and valued, with visible repair becoming evidence of skill, care and resourcefulness. This resource is an editable student portfolio, which offers the structure for a unit of work asking students to speculate about how their communities will live in their preferred future. It can be adapted to suit the student's context. For more information on Melbourne Museum education services, click HERE.
