This toolkit is intended to be an invaluable resource for teachers to use when introducing the concepts of sustainability and ethical practices to their Design & Technologies - Textiles students.


Fashion Revolution Week

Fashion Revolution Week takes place each April in memory of the Rana Plaza disaster. They have a range of school resources for teachers of Design & Technology – Textiles that focus on the damaging impact of fast fashion.

Google's We Wear Culture – the Stories Behind What We Wear is a fantastic resource. Described as “the most widely accessible and comprehensive fashion collection on the planet”, it is a searchable guide to a collective archive of some 30,000 fashion pieces that puts “three millennia of fashion at your fingertips.”




What She Makes

Oxfam’s What She Makes campaign seeks to help the women who make our clothes but do not make enough to live on. It’s a good resource for looking at the impact of fast fashion, not just on the environment but on human rights.


The True Cost

The True Cost - a movie not to miss about the terrible human and environmental cost of the fashion industry. It’s available as a digital download from $9.99 USD


A Warm Embrace that Saves Lives

Click HERE for a TED Talk by Jane Chen (4 mins long) on a fantastic textiles design project designed to save the lives of babies born in the developing world.


War on Waste Season 3

The ABC have produced an education resource to accompany the show, which focuses on food, plastic and fashion waste. Students can watch excerpts and then carry out the activities suggested in the Things to Think About prompts.

This helpful document unpacks what sustainable fashion design should be.


The Social Outfit

Explore the work of The Social Outfit - a social enterprise charity and fashion producer which provides employment and training to people from refugee communities via their studio and store. This is a great example of an organisation following a triple bottom line sustainability strategy - key knowledge for the 2024-2028 VCE Product Design & Technologies study.


Ethical Fashion Guide

Every year, Baptist World Aid produce an Ethical Fashion Guide, which shines a spotlight on which brands are proactively protecting workers and the environment and those who are not. This is a great way for students to see at a glance which retailers prioritise sustainability in their practices.


Mycelium Made

The Story of Stuff – Microfibres

Created by the team who brought us award-winning The Story of Stuff movie, this short film looks at the harmful impact micro plastics are having on the environment. Watch it HERE.


Indigenous Fashion Projects Runway at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2021

For the first time ever, Australian Fashion Week 2021 included a runway show dedicated to the work of First Nations designers. It celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers from across Australia, sharing their unique stories, journeys, rich cultural heritage and innovative designs. You can watch the show HERE.


Possum Skin Cloaks

Museums Victoria have published a beautiful account of the history and art of the Possum  Skin Cloak. It focuses on the museum's two historical cloaks, which were collected from the Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara peoples in the mid-19th Century, and remain the only known surviving cloaks in the world of their time and place. Alongside these are the stories of two newly-commissioned cloaks, which connect the makers to their ancestors and tell stories both timeless and contemporary   through their designs.

Possum Skin Cloaks by Maree Clarke

This fantastic resource for Levels 3-6 is from the NGV. Students learn about how Maree made her possum-skin cloak and the personal meaning of the design, then create a design representing significant places or journeys from their own lives. It includes a video, worksheet, resources list, tips on using the design process and evaluating their work.


First Nations Fashion is more than just the fabric

This article from the ABC is about the Emerging Mob in Fashion show at the Melbourne Fashion Festival. It offers some beautiful examples of how First Nations culture and experience influences design, and asks the big question, Can anyone wear First Nations fashion?
