Celebrating positive role models who are relatable to young people is a great way to engage a more diverse cohort of students to participate in design and engineering - whether that is women, people with a disability, Indigenous creatives, ethical operators or those from the LGBTQI+ community. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about the professional practice of professionals. And DATTA Vic has worked with some of these incredible creatives in the fields of design and engineering! |
Check out the Day 2 recording of our Gathering conference - Dr Scott Wordley from Monash University explores the maker capabilities that are becoming available to engineering students at university. He shares the types of super-curricular projects and competitions where young people develop hands-on skills and the ability to solve real world problems. |
FIRST NATIONS ENGINEERING |
First Nations Design & Engineering DATTA Vic has collected and created this set of resources which can be used by P-10 Design & Technologies, VCE Product Design & Technologies and VCE Systems Engineering teachers to embed and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in their classroom teaching. In this video produced by VCAA, Budj Bim, a site of great cultural significance, is discussed for its inspirational role in shaping Aboriginal design and engineering, specifically focusing on the creation of eel channels, eel traps, traditional Aboriginal houses and the Lake Condah weir. Indigenous Engineering & Technology at Budj Bim This video was produced by the University of Melbourne, whose Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology is collaborating with the Gunditj Mirring Tradition Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the Gunditjmara community to document and understand the sophisticated aquaculture systems of the Budj Bim cultural landscape in southwest Victoria. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in the VCE Presented with the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (VAEAI) and the Department of Education (DE) Koorie Outcomes Division, the video recordings on this page are from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in the VCE webinar program held in 2023. These video recordings are appropriate for any VCE teacher or VCE Leadership staff. EWB have a great page of resources to engage young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with engineers. |

Fusion 360 Online Training Package DATTA Vic members receive a discount on these invaluable upskilling sessions delivered by Travis Burroughs. They can be used both as teacher professional learning and for students to work through. |
In 2024, DATTA Vic and Banyule Nillumbik Tech School teamed up to deliver a series of five essential Technacy skills immersions for teachers – all free for our members and BNTS partner schools thanks to support from the Google Educator Professional Development Grant. We explored VR and AR, Generative A.I., Machine Learning, Speculative Design and Cultural Influence on Design. Teachers could choose to come to one or all of the sessions, or catch up on the recordings of the online workshops. This package contains the recordings of the online sessions and the slides and resources from the in person workshops. |
![]() | This is a recording of our July 2023 Online Teach Meet exploring how D&T teachers are using A.I. in the classroom. You'll hear from Travis Burroughs, Veena Nair and Peter Murphy about their D&T, STEM and Systems Engineering projects which make use of AI platforms to engage students more effectively. |
Laser Cutters in the Design & Technologies Classroom was the theme of this 2022 online workshop for DATTA Vic members. The session was delivered by three experienced educators who shared how they make use of this technology with their D&T classes. It features Felicity McNamara from Carey Baptist Grammar, Anthony Gasson from Banyule Nillumbik Tech School and Ian Hoffman from St. Monica's College Epping |
In April 2020, Travis Burroughs delivered this online session demonstrating how to instruct students virtually with Robot Mesh's Mimic and Virtual Academy. It covered the Robot Mesh environment, simple timed programming, loops and if statements, sensors and their function and driver control programming. |
In April 2020. Colin Chapman ran this virtual session which covers all you need to know about teaching VCE Systems Engineering online. He takes participants through a wide range of stimulus materials, and focuses on practical issues such as ideas for virtual artefact testing. This is also a helpful PL for educators who wish to introduce more digital tools in their classroom teaching. |
Northcote High School's James Dutton took a step-by-step look at Design & Technologies projects using OnShape for Laser-cutting. James demonstrated each step in the CAD process, and offered advice on how OnShape can be used in D&T projects - from home or in the classroom. He focused on one particular project - a 3Dprinted “ear saver” for healthcare staff. |
