STUDY DESIGN RESOURCES

FURTHER STUDY & CAREERS RESOURCES

Careers in Product Design & Technology

This resource package, featuring a short film, presentation and poster, was produced by DATTA Vic and RMIT, and was supported by the Victorian Government's Connecting Learning to Work FUND.

Diversity in STEM Toolkit

DATTA Vic has compiled a list of resources to encourage all students, no matter their gender, identity, ethnicity or disability status to engage in Design & Technologies and STEM education.

Diverse Role Models & Professional Practice

Celebrating positive role models who are relatable to young people is a great way to engage a more diverse cohort of students to participate in Design & Technologies - whether that is women, people with a disability, Indigenous creatives, ethical operators or those from the LGBTQI+ community. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about the professional practice of professionals. And DATTA Vic has worked with some of these incredible creatives in the fields of design and engineering!

The session was led by Dr Jude Glover and Emma Luke from RMIT School of Design, who shared information on the RMIT Industrial Design program, the admissions process and folio preparation and career pathways and opportunities. We also had presentations from 2019 graduate & Victorian Design Challenge winner Phoebe Richardson and 2019 graduate and James Dyson Award winner Tim Ottaway, who shared their own experiences of the course and talked about their practice as designers.

CULTURAL INFLUENCE ON DESIGN

First Nations Design & Engineering

DATTA Vic has collected and created this set of resources which can be used by P-10 Design & Technologies, VCE Product Design & Technologies and VCE Systems Engineering teachers to embed and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in their classroom teaching.

Indigenous Design Video

In this video produced by VCAA, Budj Bim, a site of great cultural significance, is discussed for its inspirational role in shaping Aboriginal design, specifically focusing on the creation of eel channels, eel traps, traditional Aboriginal houses and the Lake Condah weir.

Teaching First Nations Knowledge and Perspectives in Design Resource Package

The DATTA Vic 2024 Symposium, delivered in partnership with Monash MADA, aimed to build confidence and skills in teachers to appropriately celebrate First Nations' knowledge and experience in their PD&T and D&T classes. This resource captures the learnings from that day. On sale at a discounted price for members, it includes material for both teachers and students, including case studies of First Nations designers, essential information from the Australian Indigenous Design Charter, project examples, activities and teacher guidelines. This is for all educators of Design & Technologies and PD&T who wish to enrich their teaching and build an understanding in their students of how culture influences design.

Designer Case Study - Trent Jansen and Incorporating Cultural Identity

This resource is available at a discounted rate to members in our shop. Acclaimed designer Dr Trent Jansen delivers this presentation which focuses on the professional practice of a designer who strives to incorporate indigenous culture, knowledge and perspectives appropriately in his work.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in the VCE

Presented with the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (VAEAI) and the Department of Education (DE) Koorie Outcomes Division, the video recordings on this page are from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives in the VCE webinar program held in 2023. These video recordings are appropriate for any VCE teacher or VCE Leadership staff.

Piinpi Contemporary Indigenous Fashion

Bendigo Art Gallery’s First Nation’s Curator Shonae Hobson takes us a virtual tour of Piinpi, Australia’s first major survey of Indigenous Australian Fashion. This resource package includes: the recording of the webinar, chat transcription, document of useful links from Bendigo Art Gallery & slides from all presenters.

SPECULATIVE DESIGN

Creative Futures - Bio Communities

In 2023, DATTA Vic and Melbourne Museum and Banyule Nillumbik Tech School collaborated with teachers to create a Bio Communities resource as part of our annual Creative Futures Design Workshop. This digital folio engages students in speculative and regenerative design by asking How can we design new, sustainable neighborhoods based on principles of Bio Communities?

Speculative Design & a Cone of Possibilities

This Delve article unpacks the essence of speculative design and offers a tool - the Cone of Possibilities - to inspire creative thinking.

The Futures of Learning Speculative Design Toolkit

“In a world of uncertainty where school was so bland, where subjects were so bleak, where students were so bored” (FoL co-designer, 2023), The University of Melbourne's SWISP Lab has produced the Futures of Learning Speculative Co-Design Toolkit. It was created by young people and teachers, and offers a way to engage your students in meaningful speculative design. If you are a design educator in a Victorian school and would like to teach with the Speculative Design Toolkit, please contact swisp-lab@unimelb.edu.au

Speculative Design with the NGV

The resource explores Speculative Design with the NGV - one of the most significant new innovation methods which looks towards the future to address big problems by creating products and services for those scenarios. Looking at examples from NGV exhibitions, the session defined speculative design, discussed the role of speculative design in discovery and innovation, examined the practice and processes of contemporary designers and considered how classroom methodologies might be shaped by speculative design practice.

These student challenges have been produced by DATTA Vic for our members. They engage your students in speculative design – work which uses design (products, services and scenarios) to address challenges and opportunities of the future.  There are 5 challenges; wearable tech, drone transportation, lunar living, home healthcare and future communities.

Divergent & Convergent Thinking Activities

The Queensland state government has produced some activities to explore how to build skills in divergent and convergent thinking.

ETHICAL DESIGN

Sustainable & Ethical Design & Engineering Toolkit

You can explore a wide range of resources and useful links on ethical design in this free DATTA Vic toolkit.

Diversity in STEM Toolkit

This resource contains a range of positive role models and good news stories for the world of design and engineering. It's a great reminder of why representation matters, and the importance of having end users represented in the design and development of new projects.

Textiles in Society Toolkit

If you want to encourage your students to understand the damage that fast fashion does to communities around the world, this is a useful resource.

Fantastic Fungi - The Sustainable Solution to Plastic Waste

This is a great resource to explore ethical materials in design. We delivered this online workshop in partnership with NGV, where Amanda Morgan, founder and Head of Research and Development at the multi-award-winning Fungi Solutions shared how their work with this amazing natural organism, which diverts resources from landfill to sequester carbon, creates new materials and generates economic opportunities.

The Circular Economy Resource Package

In VCE PD&T, the circular economy and ethical product design are key concepts that underpin the entire study design. DATTA Vic and Sustainability Victoria teamed up on a series of webinars exploring the Circular Economy. With additional support from Replas, we delivered four online sessions:

  • What is the Circular Economy?
  • The Plastics Industry x the Circular Economy
  • The Fashion Industry x the Circular Economy
  • The Electronics Industry x the Circular Economy

The recordings and slides are great both for teacher professional learning and as student resources.

STUDENT WORK

Top Designs

The Top Designs Web Hub is the best place to access exemplar VCE PD&T student work.  It includes virtual tours, images of all the works and interviews with the exhibitors. Teachers can also request folio pages.

The Gathering Resource Package

In 2021, DATTA Vic ran The Gathering, a free online conference for our members. You can log in and watch a fantastic presentation by Hannah Gough and Millicent Meldrum. Hannah won the Premier's Award for VCE Student Design with The Lotus Bag, and Millie was runner up with her Beauty Brace. Their slides, which take an in depth view of the creation of their products and their experience of VCE PD&T, are also included.

Each year, DATTA Vic publishes our members' journal, Technotes, which is sent to all our members. Every publication includes interviews with Top Designs student exhibitors and their students. These are a great resource for both teachers and students of PD&T.
